Annual herb, pubescent. The leaves are flat, alternate, petioleless, and slightly fleshy. Perianth often 5-parted, stamens 5, ovary round-ovate, style short, stigma 2-3, filamentous. There are about 20 species, distributed in temperate and subtropical areas of the northern hemisphere and southern Africa.
